We're excited to announce that the New Steps Learning Centre is officially open and welcoming participants. This milestone represents months of planning, community input, and hard work from our team — and we couldn't be prouder to see it come to life.
What Is the Learning Centre?
The Learning Centre is a dedicated space within our program where youth can focus on education, skill development, and personal growth. It's designed to be warm, welcoming, and flexible — because we know that traditional classroom settings don't work for everyone, and learning looks different for every young person.
The space includes areas for one-on-one tutoring, group workshops, computer access for job searches and online learning, and a comfortable lounge for reading and quiet study. We've also incorporated Indigenous artwork and design elements throughout, so the space reflects the cultural identity of the youth we serve.
What Happens Here
Programming at the Learning Centre covers a wide range of topics and skills:
- Education support: GED preparation, homework help, and connections to adult learning programs
- Employment readiness: Resume building, interview practice, job search strategies, and workplace expectations
- Financial literacy: Budgeting, banking basics, understanding credit, and planning for the future
- Digital skills: Computer basics, email, online safety, and using technology for learning and work
- Life skills workshops: Cooking, cleaning, self-care, and navigating systems like healthcare and housing
Why a Dedicated Space Matters
For many of our youth, having a consistent, safe space dedicated to learning is something they've never experienced. The Learning Centre isn't just a room — it's a message that says: your growth matters, your education matters, and we've built this space for you.
Early feedback from participants has been incredibly positive. Youth have told us they appreciate having a quiet place to focus, enjoy the group workshops, and feel motivated by being around peers who are also working toward their goals.
Looking Ahead
As the Learning Centre grows, we plan to expand our programming based on what youth tell us they need. We're also exploring partnerships with local employers, educational institutions, and community organizations to create more pathways for our participants.
We're grateful to everyone who has supported this project and to the youth who are showing up every day ready to learn. This is just the beginning.
